So you want to be a kayak instructor? Then this is the class for you!
The Instructor Certification Workshop – or ICW – is a 3-day course designed to develop and evaluate instructor candidates.
The ICW format is offered for Level 1 and Level 2 instructor candidates and combines an Instructor Development Workshop (IDW) with an Instructor Certification Exam (ICE). Above Level 2 the workshop and exam are separate activities.
The ICW will help instructor candidates develop personal skills to be able to effectively model and demonstrate paddling skills to their students. The ICW will also help instructor candidates develop teaching, group management and safety skills to effectively develop skills in their students.
Please visit the ACA website for more information and download the following guides to instructor qualifications:
Participation in the ICW does not guarantee certification as an instructor. Certification is based upon both paddling and teaching skills and must meet the standards for an instructor at the level of assessment. Instructor candidates will be evaluated by the Instructor Trainer (IT) and will either pass the assessment or receive a continuance, which will inform the candidate of the skills they need to improve to pass the assessment.
Instructor candidates must be a current member of the ACA and agree to join the ACA’s Safety Education and Instruction Council (SEIC) upon completion of their instructor training.
Candidates must hold a current CPR and First Aid certification.
[Note: This class has been arranged for the UMass Lowell Outdoor Club. Interested candidates should register through the UMass Website]
