Make the Ocean Your Playground!

Kayak and Stand-Up Paddleboard Instruction on Boston’s South Shore

What We Do

We are experienced, ACA-certified instructors providing top-notch instruction, coaching and guiding in both kayaks and stand-up paddle boards (SUP)

INSTRUCTION

Both private and small group instruction in Sea Kayaking and SUP. Beginner or advanced, we offer instruction for all levels. Whether you just want to learn a new stroke or go play in currents or surf, we’ve got you covered. Join a group class or contact us about custom instruction (group or private). We’ll even come to you if you can’t come to us.

COACHING

A coach is more than just an instructor. A coach is someone who learns your strengths and weaknesses and develops a custom training program designed just for you. Want to take your paddling to the next level? Want to build your skills with a specific goal in mind? Contact us to find out what our coaches can do for you.

ASSESSMENTS

For those looking to measure themselves or set a goal for developing their skills, we offer American Canoe Association (ACA) paddling skills assessments. If you’re interested in becoming an instructor or a guide, we offer kayak instructor and coastal kayak trip leader certifications. Watch our calendar for upcoming ACA workshops or contact us to arrange a skills assessment.

GUIDING

Want to explore the New England coastline, but not too sure where to start? Our expert guides will help plan your trip, organize your group and make sure you’re safe on the water. We’ll even show you a few secret spots along the way. We can provide guides for for beginner and advanced paddlers & groups. Give us a call and let us put together a trip designed just for you!

Our Business is Instruction

Our job is to help you become a better paddler. Period.

Think of us like you would a golf pro or tennis coach. Our job is to help you get the most out of your sea kayak or paddleboard experience by teaching you new skills, refining the skills you already have and challenging you to push your personal limits.

Got Gear?

If you own your own kayak or paddleboard, let us help you get the most out of the gear you already own.

Whether you’re new to the sport or have been paddling for years, we can help you refine your strokes, balance and edging to master control of your craft.

Need Gear?

If you’re new to the sport or just not ready to buy your own equipment yet, we can arrange rental equipment in conjunction with our classes and trips.

Sorry. We don’t rent equipment for personal use outside of our classes, but we can refer you to one of our partners for your rental needs.

Where We Paddle

Our classes and trips are arranged to go where the conditions are best for skills of the group and the objective of the class. We might paddle Boston’s North Shore or head down to Rhode Island, but our home is in Cohasset on Boston’s South Shore.

Some of our favorite locations include Hingham Bay, Nantasket Beach, Little Harbor in Cohasset, the North River in Scituate and – of course – beautiful Cohasset Harbor itself.

Meet Our Coaches

Our Coaches and Guides are all ACA-certified paddle sports instructors.
Paddling is our passion as well as our job!

KEVIN HORNER
Owner, Head Instructor

Kevin started paddling canoes on the Concord River in Concord MA with his father. After college he became certified as an ACA Canoe Instructor and was hired by Charles River Canoe & Kayak in 1998 as an instructor. It was through Dave Jacques at Charles River Canoe & Kayak that Kevin became a serious kayaker. He has spent most of his 17 years at CRCK running the Instruction & Guiding Program as the Director of Outdoor Programming. Today Kevin is an ACA certified Level 4: Open Water Kayak Instructor, Level 2: Stand-up Paddleboard Instructor and Level 2: Essentials of Kayak Touring Instructor Trainer.

You can reach Kevin at kevin@cohassetpaddlesports.com

SCOTT SHEAR
Instructor & Coach

Scott started kayaking in order to explore Boston’s outer harbor islands. A gift from his wife of an Aquaterra kayak and a copy of Derek Hutchinson’s Guide to Sea Kayaking provided him a means to explore the islands and started a 20 year passion for kayaking. Eventually, his preference for solo paddling required him to master ocean paddling skills that could only be learned from New England’s top coaches. Today, Scott is a BCU 4 Star Sea Leader and an ACA certified Level 4 Open Water Kayak Instructor whose passion is now helping others discover the skills of ocean kayaking.

NATE STETSON
Instructor & Coach

Nate has been kayaking since he was 8 years old and instructing since 2007. He loves to be in a boat, no matter the circumstances, but spends his free time in surf whenever possible. When there’s no surf, he is probably sailing or mountain biking. He is experienced with teaching academic subjects as well, and is particularly interested in theory of learning, pedagogy, and body mechanics. He teaches for that moment when a student has a realization that opens up a whole new set of possibilities in whatever discipline of kayaking they want to pursue. Nate is an ACA certified Level 3 Coastal Kayak Instructor.
